Meghalaya CM reviews border security amid evictions

Amid reports of illegal immigrants trying to enter Nagaland after being evicted from Assam, Meghalaya another immediate neighbour of Assam has stepped up vigil along its border with Assam amid fears of a potential influx of illegal immigrants given the crackdown against illegal settlers in Assam.

As part of this heightened response, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma today convened a high-level meeting to assess border security and inter-agency coordination and directed all district administrations to step up surveillance along sensitive stretches of the inter-state border. Special emphasis was placed on strengthening monitoring mechanisms in vulnerable zones.

CM Sangma stressed the need for proactive grassroots coordination, urging collaboration among district officials, traditional heads, NGOs, and Village Defence Parties (VDPs) to prevent illegal movement and infiltration.

The government underlined the importance of grassroots-level coordination to ensure peace and stability in the wake of Assam’s ongoing operations.

“In light of the eviction drive for illegal immigrants by the Government of Assam, a meeting was convened with all Deputy Commissioners to strengthen vigilance and security along the state’s border areas adjoining Assam. We are coordinating with district officials, local heads, NGOs and VDPs at the village level to ensure no movement and infiltration takes place in the state, especially in vulnerable areas,” CM Sangma tweeted.

The meeting, was held at the Secretariat, attended by Chief Secretary D.P. Wahlang, Director General of Police Idashisha Nongrang, Additional Chief Secretary (Home), and Deputy Commissioners from across the state.

It may be mentioned here that besides Meghalaya, Nagaland and Manipur also stepped up vigil along the borders with Assam in a bid to check the influx.
