At The Assam Times, ethics guide our journalism. We work to uphold public trust by following principles of truthfulness, fairness, and accountability.

A. Truth & Accuracy

We verify facts thoroughly before publication and provide context to avoid misleading readers.

B. Fairness

We report issues impartially. Individuals or organisations mentioned in potentially negative reporting are given an opportunity to respond.

C. Independence

Our journalists and contributors do not accept gifts, benefits, or favors that can influence coverage.

D. Accountability

We take responsibility for our reporting. We correct errors promptly and transparently.

E. Respect for Privacy

We respect individual privacy and avoid unnecessary intrusion unless there is a strong public interest.

F. Protection of Sources

Confidential sources are protected as per journalistic norms unless disclosure is legally mandated.

2. Corrections Policy

A. Handling Errors

When an error is discovered:

  1. We verify the accuracy concern

  2. Correct the content promptly

  3. Add a Correction Note or Update Note at the bottom of the article

B. Types of Corrections

  • Minor Changes: Typographical edits or grammar fixes may be made without a public note

  • Major Corrections: Factual mistakes or misleading information require a correction note

C. How Readers Can Request a Correction

Readers may request a correction by emailing:

Include:

  • Article URL

  • Explanation of the error

  • Supporting information, if possible

We aim to respond within 24-72 hours.

D. Retractions

If a story is found to be wholly inaccurate or unethical, we may issue a Retraction and update readers with an explanation.
