Assam Bans Gutkha and Pan Masala with Tobacco for One Year

The production, distribution, and sale of gutkha, panmasala, and other chewing goods that contain tobacco and nicotine are prohibited throughout the state of Assam by the government.

The goal of the directive, which went into force on August 21, is to protect public health.

"The ban is in effect, and this latest notification continues the measures already in place."

The restriction, which has been approved by the Health and Family Welfare Department, will be in place for a year.

The main justification given by authorities for the measure was the detrimental effects these items had on health.

Relevant provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act of 2006 as well as the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations of 2011 support the ban.

Any individual or company found to be in violation of the order would face severe legal action, officials have warned.
