Internet access in Assam's secondary and higher secondary schools rises to 53.8%



In recent years, the proportion of secondary and upper secondary schools in the state that have internet access has significantly increased.

Just 13.7% of Assamese secondary and upper secondary schools had internet access in 2015–16, according to the most recent Central government publication, Children in India 2025. But in 2023–2024, that percentage increased to 53.8%.

As time has gone on, the availability of internet access in these schools has increased more quickly. It increased from 13.7% in 2015–16 to 15.7% in 2016–17, 16.4% in 2017–18, 20.9% in 2018–19, 22.6 in 2019–20, 24.5% in 2020–21, 29.8% in 2021–22, and 34.6% in 2022–23 before reaching 53.8% in 2023–24.

According to the data, 55,283 Assamese schools were part of the NEP structure in 2024–2025.

Of these, 10,301 were secondary schools, 9,116 were middle schools, and 35,866 were foundational and preparatory schools.

There were libraries, book banks, and reading corners in 51,763 of the state's schools.

There were playgrounds in 45,594 schools, functional girls toilets in 52,065 schools, functional boys toilets in 51,285 schools, functional electricity in 49,092 schools, computer facility in 43,515 schools, drinking water in 54,167 schools, and hand wash facility in 51,426 schools.

In Assam, the average annual cost of education for each student is Rs 9,360. The course fee has a maximum item cost of Rs 3,545.

Other expenses include textbooks and stationery (Rs 1,763), uniforms (Rs 1,009), transportation (Rs 2,186), and other (Rs 857).

Under the NEP framework, the preparatory dropout rate in 2024–2025 was 3.7, compared to a middle school dropout rate of 5 and a secondary dropout rate of 12.2.

The Pupil Teacher Ratio (PTR) at the foundational, preparatory, middle school, and secondary levels was 10, 11, 13, and 15, respectively, at that time.

In 2023–2024, Assam's grade 5 completion rate was 67.09 percent, grade 8 completion was 72.86 percent, and grade 12 completion was 35.59 percent.

According to the NEP framework, the gender parity index in 2024–2025 was 1.2 at the middle and secondary educational levels, 1.1 at the preparatory level, and 1 at the foundation level.
