CM Sarma accuses Cong of neglecting Zubeen Garg probe defends mustard oil scheme

Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, attacked the Congress party harshly on Friday, saying it was "living in a fool's paradise" and was not actively participating in the late musician Zubeen Garg's legal proceedings.

After the 2026 Assembly elections, he also made fun of Congress leaders for mocking his government's proposal to give mustard oil to low income households using ration cards.

The Chief Minister delivered a scathing attack on the opposition while speaking at a public event in Dibrugarh where incentive checks were given to 14,025 women who were beneficiaries of government welfare programs.

"The Congress party opposes Zubeen Garg's legal proceedings. If they were, they would have given us advice on how to proceed and what to do.

There has been no response from the Congress. They could have at least met me or offered advice if they genuinely cared about Zubeen.

Rather, they saw his case as a means of gaining an election. Sarma remarked, "The Congress is living in a fool's paradise."

The Chief Minister's comments coincide with escalating political discussion on the current inquiry into the untimely death of well known Assamese musician Zubeen Garg in Singapore.

The administration has been criticized by opposition leaders of not managing the matter in a transparent manner; Sarma rejected this accusation as politically motivated and without merit.

Sarma turned his focus to Congress's criticism of the government's welfare measures, namely the plan to use ration cards to distribute mustard oil.

He claimed that the opposition was "mocking the poor" and that they were unaware of the cultural and economic realities of Assam.

He claimed that Congress officials had been making fun of us on social media for the past few days for providing mustard oil to the underprivileged.
