Joe Biden praises Gaza peace deal and Donald Trump

The road to a peace agreement in Gaza was "not easy," according to former US President Joe Biden, who commended his successor, Donald Trump, for reaching a successful and "renewed" ceasefire agreement on Monday (local time).

"This deal was not reached easily. My government put forth great effort to stop the war, bring the hostages home, and aid Palestinian citizens. On X, Biden said, "I applaud President Trump and his team for securing a renewed ceasefire over the finish line."

During Biden's administration, in October 2023, Hamas strikes upon Israel sparked the Gaza war. He continued, "Now, with the support of the United States and the world, the Middle East is on a path to peace that I hope endures, offering a future marked by equal measures of peace, dignity, and safety for Israelis and Palestinians alike."

The Democrat was also relieved that Hamas had freed the final 20 Israeli detainees from the Palestinian enclave as part of Trump's peace plan. "I am extremely thankful and relieved that this day has arrived for the remaining 20 hostages who have gone through unspeakable hardship and are now reunited with their loved ones, and for the civilians in Gaza who have suffered great loss and will now have the opportunity to start over," Biden stated.

Trump, Biden's predecessor in the White House, traveled to Israel and Egypt on Monday to complete the deal.He spoke to Israel's Knesset, or parliament, as the two sides exchanged captives and hostages. He and a number of other international leaders signed the historic peace agreement in Egypt. Three days after a truce was declared and Israeli forces retreated to a pre-established line, the summit was held in Sharm el-Sheikh.
