Sonam Wangchuk's wife, Gitanjali Angmo, petitioned the Supreme Court on Friday to get him released.
This comes two days after she contacted President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday to request her help in releasing the climate activist, who has been detained in Rajasthan's Jodhpur jail since being arrested in connection with the violent riots in Ladakh on September 24.Angmo claimed in a three page letter to President Murmu that she is totally ignorant of her husband's illness and accused him of being a "witch hunt" for supporting the cause of the people for the previous four years.
On September 26, two days after violent riots in Leh town left four people dead and numerous more injured, Wangchuk was placed under arrest under the National Security Act (NSA).
Violence erupted amid demonstrations in favor of demands, such as Ladakh's statehood and its inclusion in the Constitution's Sixth Schedule.
Following the unrest in the Union Territory on September 24, Gitanjali J. Angmo, the CEO of the Himalayan Institute of Alternatives (HAIL), also criticized the Center on Thursday and accused the police of torturing the Ladakh people.
She claimed that the Union Home Ministry is "misusing" the Ladakh Police and compared the current state of affairs in Ladakh to that of British India.
"Is India truly a free country? Under the Queen's command, 24,000 British soldiers oppressed 300 million Indians in 1857 with 135,000 Indian sepoys.
Under the MHA's orders, twelve administrators are currently abusing 2400 Ladakhi police to persecute and torture 3 lakh Ladakhis," Gitanjali wrote on X.
