West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has come under fire from Sovana Mohanty, the chairperson of the Odisha State Commission for Women, for saying that "girls should not be allowed to go out at night" prior to the commission's visit to Durgapur on Monday to meet with the family of the medical student who was allegedly gang raped.
Mohanty urged Banerjee to guarantee women's protection in West Bengal, claiming that she does not share the survivor's suffering. "Give her a chance to talk. The agony is not felt by her. The medical student and I will have counseling.
"Women should not go out at night" is not accurate. Women need to be reassured of their protection," Shovana Mohanty told ANI. Following the alleged gang rape in Durgapur, Mamata Banerjee made a startling announcement on Sunday, recommending colleges not to let females go outside at night.
"The incident startled me, but private medical schools should also look out for their students, especially the girls. At night, the girls shouldn't be permitted to leave the campus. They must also defend themselves.
A wooded area is present. "Everyone is being searched by police," Mamata Banerjee stated. In Durgapur, a private medical college student in his second year was allegedly gang raped. The survivor is an Odisha native.
The chairwoman stated that after asking about West Bengal's medical care and the ongoing investigation into the matter, the three member Odisha State Commission for Women team would report back to the Odisha government. The delegation was departing for Durgapur.
"We will meet her parents and check on her health," she said. After asking about West Bengal's medical care, mental health, and whether a proper inquiry is being carried out, we will present our recommendations to the State administration.
The team has three members. We'll also ask about expediting the case and concerning another accused person who hasn't been taken into custody yet." The chairwoman of the Odisha Women Commission further stated, "Odisha CM spoke to the girl's father and the administration."
