President Droupadi Murmu named Justice Surya Kant the next Chief Justice of India on Thursday, completing the process in an unprecedentedly quick seven days after it began. On November 24, he will take an oath.
On October 24, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal wrote to CJI B R Gavai asking for his proposal for the next CJI. On October 27, CJI Gavai, who had just returned to Delhi from an official visit to Bhutan, suggested that Justice Kant, the most senior SC judge, be appointed as the next CJI.
The three step procedure used to be finished in two weeks. "I convey my heartiest congratulations and best wishes to him," the law minister tweeted.
The first person from Haryana to lead the Supreme Court in its 75 year existence, Justice Kant will serve a term of more than a year and two months.
