Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, announced on Sunday that a bill outlawing polygamy had been adopted by the state cabinet. He also stated that the bill would subject offenders to a heavy seven year prison sentence. For the Sixth Schedule locations, there can be a few exclusions.
"A bill to outlaw polygamy was adopted by the Assam cabinet today. "The Assam Prohibition of Polygamy Bill, 2025" is the name of the bill. On November 25, it will be presented to the assembly, according to Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Speaking at a press conference following a cabinet meeting, the chief minister of Assam stated that the state government will establish a new fund to pay women who are victims of polygamy so they won't have to struggle to carry on with their lives.
According to Sarma, a conviction for polygamy might result in a harsh sentence of up to seven years in prison. "We have also made the decision to establish a fund to compensate the ladies who were harmed.
In order to ensure that no woman experiences difficulty in her life, the government will provide financial support in the necessary situations," he continued.
"A person who has a live spouse, is not officially separated from the other spouse by following the proper legal procedures, or is a party to a marriage that has not yet been dissolved or annulled by a divorce decision is forbidden from engaging in polygamy.
The Assam Prohibition of Polygamy Bill, 2025, also aims to compensate the women who suffer greatly as a result of polygamous marriages. The Assam Chief Minister stated during a news conference at Lok Sewa Bhawan in Guwahati, "This Bill has been framed with the avowed objective to streamline the society to save the society from the scourge of such practices."
The first phase of the Rs 478.78 crore "Construction of State of the Art Judicial Township at Rangmahal, North Guwahati" project received administrative permission from the Assam government.
"The main goal of the High Court Complex Development (Phase-I) is to create a complete High Court Complex that will serve as the region's highest judicial hub.
All of the buildings in the complex will be connected by bridges. The Chief Minister stated that the High Court Building (G+4), High Court Bar Building (G+6), and High Court Office Building (G+6) are important elements.
The "Assam Startup and Innovation Policy 2025-30" has been adopted by the State Cabinet, which is a major step towards making Assam one of India's top centers for innovation and entrepreneurship over the next five years. Over a five year period, the overall financial impact is Rs. 397 crore.
