Himanta is creating a fake voter list by including BJP workers from UP and Bihar, says Assam Congress chief Gaurav Gogoi

Gaurav Gogoi, head of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), claimed on Wednesday that Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is attempting to create a "fake voters list" by registering the names of BJP employees from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh in order to win the 2026 Assembly elections.

During a procession held in the Nagaon district of central Assam on Wednesday as part of the celebrations of "Samvidhan Divas" (Constitution Day), Gogoi, an Assamese member of the Lok Sabha and deputy leader of the party in the Lok Sabha, made the accusation.

"Numerous towns, villages, urban youths, and women throughout Assam have already started a fierce uprising against Himanta Biswa Sarma.

This has alarmed him, and he is now desperately creating fictitious voter lists. The people of Assam want to be freed from Sarma's mismanagement, while he hopes to reclaim his position as chief minister with votes from outside the state. Assamese citizens votes alone must be used to elect representatives, according to Gogoi.

The Election Commission began a "special revision" of the electoral rolls in poll bound Assam at the time of Gogoi's claim. The Chief Electoral Officer of Assam, Anurag Goyal, recently stated that people from other states may also be enlisted in Assam provided they deleted their names in their home state, which raised suspicions regarding the enrolment of "outsiders."

However, Gogoi stated that Congress workers were on guard because the Election Commission's recent actions seem to be intended to assist the BJP in forming governments by manipulating votes.

"To prevent vote theft, the party is making Block Level Agents and booth committees more vigilant and active." "The future of Assam should be in the hands of Assamese people and not on those from outside," Gogoi stated.

Assam's assembly elections are scheduled for April of the following year. Gogoi, who was appointed APCC president in May, is probably going to represent the Congress led "anti BJP front" as chief minister in the elections.

However, CM Sarma has often claimed that Gaurav and his British wife, Elizabeth, are "agents of Pakistan's ISI." Gogoi denied the accusation.
