Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese became the nation's first leader to be married while in office on Saturday when he wed his partner, Jodie Haydon.
In a private ceremony held in the garden of his official Canberra home, The Lodge, a beaming 62 year old Albanese married the financial services employee.
The prime minister posted a single word on social media, "Married," along with a video of himself wearing a bow tie and clutching the hand of his happy wife, who was wearing a long white dress while confetti fell.
"We are absolutely delighted to share our love and commitment to spending our future lives together, in front of our family and closest friends," the pair added in a separate joint statement.
More than a year had passed after Albanese proposed on Valentine's Day 2024, claiming to have found a partner "who I want to spend the rest of my life with" at the time.
They were married by a celebrant after writing their own vows. The ring bearer was Albanese's shaggy cavoodle, Toto. Stevie Wonder's "Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I'm Yours)" played as the couple walked down the aisle following the ceremony, during which guests drank beer from a Sydney brewery.
On Monday, the newlyweds will embark on a five-day honeymoon in Australia. The prime minister met Haydon more than five years ago at a business dinner in Melbourne. He divorced his former wife in 2019 and has an adult son named Nathan.
In a landslide election victory in May of this year, the leader of the center left Labor Party was elected to a second three year term.
While in high school, he joined Labor, and subsequently at the University of Sydney, he got actively involved in the harsh world of student politics.
