Following Monday's fatal car explosion near Delhi's Red Fort neighbourhood, which left 12 people dead and numerous others injured, the UK government has revised its travel advisory for British nationals.
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) cautioned British nationals in Delhi to exercise caution and heed local authorities' directions in its most recent guidelines.
The FCDO alert for India states, "There has been an explosion at the Red Fort (Lal Qila) Metro Station, New Delhi." It continues, "If you're in the immediate area, pay attention to local media and heed the advice of the local authorities."
The recommendation also retains cautions for Jammu and Kashmir and Manipur owing to security concerns, and it restates the current advice against traveling within 10 km of the India-Pakistan border, with the exception of the Wagah border crossing.
The country based advise is a "guidance on travel" rather than an imposed limitation, according to the FCDO. It seeks to assist citizens in making "informed decisions" and warns that disregarding such advise may impact the validity of travel insurance.
Nine people were killed and more than twenty injured when a Hyundai i20 automobile caught fire close to the Red Fort Metro Station on Monday at 6:52 p.m. According to authorities, three more people died from their wounds on Tuesday, bringing the total to 12.
As Delhi Police continue their investigation into the explosion under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), the city is still on high alert. The incident may have been connected to terror, according to forensic and intelligence investigations.
