Assam launches SMS alert system to reduce school absenteeism

In an effort to lower student absenteeism in schools, the Assam government's department of school education introduced an automatic SMS alert system on Monday.

According to an official announcement, an app designed to track attendance and other issues in Assam's government schools would warn parents and instructors when a pupil missed five days in a row.

Through the Shiksha Setu Application, the department keeps track of teachers' and students' daily attendance. It has been noted that students missed school for a variety of reasons, including family problems and parental ignorance.

"The department, in order to address the issue and improve students' attendance, has launched a new, state-of-the-art Automated SMS-Based Absenteeism Alert System, and this technology-driven initiative is a crucial step toward strengthening student attendance, promoting educational continuity and enabling timely, focused intervention to mitigate dropout risks across all schools," said the statement.

Students who miss five days in a row will receive standardized SMS reminders from the system. In order to ensure ongoing communication with the family and school, these messages will be automatically created at predetermined five-day intervals (on the fifth, tenth, and fifteenth days of absence) and will continue until the student in question resumes attendance.

According to the statement, two important stakeholders class teachers and parents or guardians will receive customised alerts at the same time.

Teachers will receive targeted alerts that include the student's name, class, and section, allowing them to get in touch with the parents and try to get their children back to school. Conversely, parents will get a clear and succinct notice of their child's persistent absence.

The SMS notifications would be sent in the five official languages of Assamese, Bengali, Bodo, Hindi, and English in recognition of the state's linguistic diversity.

According to the statement, in order to maximize reach and comprehension, messages will be issued in at least two local languages in each district, depending on the geographic and demographic characteristics.
