As tensions between the two nations escalate after Japan's prime minister's comments regarding Taiwan infuriated Beijing, China declared countermeasures against the former chief of staff of Japan's Self-Defense Forces on Monday.
The Chinese foreign ministry claimed that Shigeru Iwasaki "seriously interfered" in China's domestic affairs and breached both the one-China principle and the spirit of political consensus between China and Japan, which is why the countermeasures were adopted.
According to the government, the countermeasures include limiting visas, freezing Iwasaki's assets, and forbidding any dealings or collaboration with him.
