According to road transport ministry statistics released in RS, unpaid fines increased from Rs 6,654 crore in 2023 to Rs 9,097 crore in 2024, while recovery of fines raised by e-challans decreased to Rs 3,834 crore in 2024 from Rs 4,150 crore in 2023, reports Dipak Dash.
In response to a query about the number of e-challans issued, fines recovered, and unpaid e-challans for traffic infractions between 2022 and 2024, the ministry stated that Uttar Pradesh led the list for both pending challans and fine recovery, followed by Rajasthan.
Over the course of three years, UP claimed recovering Rs 1,717 crore, but the outstanding fine was Rs 5,785 crore. High outstanding debts of Rs 1,235 crore and Rs 814 crore were recorded by Tamil Nadu and Kerala, respectively.
According to data from the previous year, only 30% of the fines Rs 3,834.8 crore out of a total of Rs 12,933 crore were recovered.
