In response to a growing public outcry calling for state action in the wake of celebrity Zubeen Garg's tragic death on September 19, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday urged people to "not make Assam Nepal in the name of Zubeen."
In Assam, Garg's passing has led to widespread grief and indignation over his premature passing.Fans have mostly blamed Shyamkanu Mahanta and Garg's manager Siddhartha Sharma for this outrage, accusing them of carelessness and poor leadership in light of Garg's medical conditions.
According to reports, he had respiratory difficulties while swimming on a yacht while in Singapore, and the condition that led to his death was listed as "drowning" on the certificate of death that Singaporean authorities issued.
In response to this outrage, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been established to look into a case that was filed with the CID against Shyamkanu Mahanta, Siddharth Sharma, and others under BNS sections dealing to criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide that does not qualify as murder, and causing death by negligence.
When a throng attempted to barge into Sharma's Guwahati home on Thursday when a SIT team was conducting searches there and then threw stones at police cars departing the property in the evening, police had to deploy lathi charges to disperse them.
This was the violent turn of the protest. Nine people were eventually taken into custody by police in relation to this incident.
During a Saturday Facebook Live session, Sarma stated: "This is Zubeen's Assam."
We cannot allow Assam to become into Nepal for any reason. Nepal has been used as an example on social media for a few days.
In Assam, we will use Lachit Barphukan as an example. We'll use Zubeen, Bhupen Hazarika, and Maharaj Prithu as examples. Not the case of Nepal.
He continued by saying: "Zubeen Garg will be the most harmed because this is Zubeen's Assam if even one of Assam's properties is damaged."
