In honour of Zubeen Garg, a cherished cultural figure in Assam, a sombre plantation drive was held on Sunday at the Dhekiajuli Branch Xahitya Xabha.
Local residents actively participated in the project, which was co led by the Xahitya Xabha and the environmental group Seuj Society.Several indigenous seedlings, including Nahor, White Sandalwood, and Red Sandalwood, were planted to celebrate the occasion.
Environmental activists Doly Das, Monmayuri Das, and Shailav Bhattacharjya joined Prabhakar Barman, President of the Dhekiajuli Xahitya Xabha, Gautam Rajbanshi, Secretary, social worker Dhruva Kumar Bora, and Sanjay Barua, State President of the Seuj Society, in launching the drive.
Speaking before the assembly, Ananda Tanti, president of the Sonitpur district of the All Adivasi Students Association of Assam (AASAA), referred to the 1960s era Dhekiajuli Xahitya Xabha buildings as a "local heritage site" and emphasised the responsibility of all residents to protect the area.
The Dhekiajuli Municipality, Xahitya Xabha, and Seuj Society have conducted massive cleaning campaigns in recent days to clear the area of rubbish and plastic.
However, there was harsh criticism when criminals were discovered throwing trash close to the Xahitya Xabha gate once more.
As a permanent homage to the late artist, the Seuj Society has also decided to plant Nahor saplings at several different locations across Shaheed Nagari Dhekiajuli.
