Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Monday (September 29, 2025) that the Assam government had formally requested that the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) invoke the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) with Singapore in relation to the death of singer Zubeen Garg in the Southeast Asian nation.
"Once invoked, this will ensure full cooperation from Singaporean authorities giving us access to case details and assistance to bring back the accused and secure justice," Mr. Sarma wrote in a post to X.To look into the singer's death in Singapore from drowning in the water on September 19, the Assam government formed a 10 member Special Investigation Team (SIT), headed by Special DGP M P Gupta.
Soon once the required processes are finished, two Assam police officials are probably going to Singapore.
Garima Saikia Garg, Zubeen Garg's widow, stated that a proper investigation should be carried out because the singer's family is interested in learning what transpired in his final moments that resulted in his death.
We would like to know what happened to him, why, and how this carelessness could have occurred.
Following the singer's 11th day rites in Guwahati, Ms. Garima told reporters, "We want answers."
She stated that everyone who was present at the event and on the yacht with him (before to his passing) "must answer this."
When they recognised he wasn't in a condition to swim, why didn't they pull him out of the water? Since it was so simple to divert his attention, they could have done so," she claimed.
According to her, his manager, Siddhartha Sharma, knew that Zubeen should avoid areas with fire or water since these could cause him to have an epileptic seizure.
"Justice is what I desire! I want a thorough investigation and responses to all of our queries. Ms. Garima continued, "I have complete faith in the investigating process.
The family had thought that those who were with him would look after him, but "now we realise that they did not do so," she said.
When asked if Zubeen had taken the necessary medications, his wife replied that she didn't know, but that his medications were shipped from here when he went to Singapore.
