The ICC Women's World Cup will be held in India and Sri Lanka between September 30 and November 2. India and Sri Lanka will play their first game on Tuesday in Guwahati.
"We are thrilled that Assam will host the opening of the Women's World Cup. Since I'll be preoccupied with the puja, I won't be attending the opening match," he declared.
Sarma gave assurances that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) looking into the death of well known musician Zubeen Garg is moving forward with diligence and emphasised that the government is dedicated to enforcing justice by holding those responsible for the event accountable.
Assam was incensed when Zubeen drowned while swimming in Singapore on September 19, with many arguing that it was a conspiracy rather than an accident.
"We are not currently taking any actions that would let the Assamese people down. There are numerous processes underway.
"I think we'll be able to provide justice and punish everyone involved in this incident," he said.
Earlier, Chief Minister Sharma paid homage to the portrait of renowned artist Zubeen Garg in Dharapur, which is located in the Jalukbari constituency, before attending the Durga Puja pandal in Guwahati.
The Chief Minister participated in the puja rituals after this honour. Notably, over this festive season, he is scheduled to take part in 29 pujas in the Jalukbari constituency.
The pandals, decked out in colourful decorations, are a hive of devotion as the festivities build for Monday's Saptami, the seventh day of Navratri.
Kaalratri, the harshest manifestation of Goddess Durga, is worshipped on the seventh day of Navratri. She is said to be the destroyer of all bad and evil forces.
Goddess Kaalratri wears a garland of skulls around her neck and rides a donkey. "Kaalratri" means "the one who brings the death of darkness" in Sanskrit.
