Assam leads India's 4G with 2,053 towers and aims for 5G, 6G

With 2,053 towers already installed around the state as part of the nation's first entirely indigenous mobile network, Assam is leading the way in India's Swadeshi 4G revolution.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially launched the historic project on Saturday in Jharsuguda, Odisha, marking India's admission into the group of countries having their own end to end telecommunications infrastructure.

At a special occasion held at Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra, BSNL CMD A. Robert J. Ravi, Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran, Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised the initiative and Assam's expanding position in the sector.

CM Sarma emphasised Assam's leadership by stating, "Of the 92,633 Swadeshi towers that have been developed throughout India, 2,053 are in Assam.

This illustrates how Assam is spearheading the digital revolution in India.

Every system, software, tower, and even optical fibre in our network is completely Swadeshi for the first time. This is a time of pride for Assam and the country.

One of BSNL's five future data centres, which will be constructed in Guwahati, would also be located in the state.

"The IT park near Borjhar will expand quickly with a data centre in Guwahati, opening up thousands of opportunities for Assamese youth in software and data management," Sarma continued.

In keeping with a pledge made during Advantage Assam, Union Minister Scindia confirmed that Gauhati University would host a 5G research facility.

As a result, he claimed, Assam would become a centre for telecom innovation and research.

"India used to be a service oriented country, but we are now a producing nation.

We are now a hub for innovation, entrepreneurship, and exports, when previously we were viewed as a consumer nation," the Union Minister stated.

The state's participation is further highlighted by the fact that the rollout takes place in Assam during BSNL's silver anniversary.

With plans for 6G by 2030, the Swadeshi 4G network will shortly grow to 5G.
