In a new assault on the FBI, US President Donald Trump said Saturday that hundreds of undercover agents were there in secret during the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021, despite former director Christopher Wray's public claims to the contrary.Though it's uncertain if all of them were within the Capitol crowd, Trump claimed that the FBI had sent 274 plainclothes operatives into the crowds in Washington, DC, that day, citing a story from The Blaze.
Trump posted on Truth Social, "It was just revealed that the FBI had covertly placed 274 FBI Agents into the Crowd just prior to, and during, the January 6th Hoax, against all Rules, Regulations, Protocols, and Standards."
He also charged Wray with deceiving lawmakers. "This is not the same as what Director Christopher Wray repeatedly said! Trump stated, "I want to know who all of these so called 'Agents' are and what they were doing on that now 'Historic' Day."
"The former Director of the FBI, Christopher Wray, has some serious explaining to do," he continued. Comey and Wray were caught lying twice in a row.
According to last year's inspector general investigation from the Justice Department, there was "no evidence" of undercover FBI personnel at the Capitol or among the demonstration crowds.
According to the New York Post, the same report did, however, establish the presence of 26 confidential informants, four of whom entered the Capitol without permission.
Democrats quickly retaliated. According to CNN, House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries accused Trump of encouraging the violence and was now trying to shift the blame, saying on MSNBC that he was "lying to the American people about the events of January 6."
The intensified emphasis coincides with the creation of a subcommittee by Trump's congressional allies to look into federal involvement in the incident.
