Rajnath Singh launches defence unit of Indian company near Casablanca

Union defence Minister Rajnath Singh and his colleague Abdelatif Loudyi on Tuesday officially opened the first Indian private sector plant in Africa, a state of the art defence production facility for armoured vehicles near Casablanca, Morocco.

Tata Advanced Systems Limited established the factory to manufacture wheeled armoured platforms (WhAP 8x8) that it co designed with DRDO.

With its increased mobility, protection, and mission adaptability, the WhAP may be used as an ambulance, command post, mortar carrier, infantry fighting vehicle, armoured personnel carrier, and reconnaissance vehicle.

According to Singh, India's "Atmanirbhar Bharat" goal aims to build capabilities that enable the nation to become a reliable supplier of cutting edge technology and superior goods for the global market, rather than merely producing defence equipment and technologies for its own requirements.

For India, independence does not equate to seclusion. Instead, our goal is to cultivate strategic autonomy.

Our goal is to build the capacity to defend our country on our own while continuing to interact with our international allies.

We are working on "Make with Friends" and "Make for the World" in addition to "Make in India," he continued.

The TASL plant is a key hub for exports and collaboration because of Morocco's strategic location as a gateway to Africa and Europe, Singh said, calling the event "a historic moment" in the developing bilateral strategic alliance.

The plant, which occupies 20,000 square meters, will start supplying the Royal Moroccan Army with WhAP 8x8 trucks the following month.
