The Wall Street Journal said Friday that the United States intends to request that chip companies produce the same quantity of semiconductors locally that their consumers acquire from foreign manufacturers.
According to the story, which cited people familiar with the concept, companies that fail to maintain a 1:1 ratio over time would be subject to a levy.President Donald Trump of the United States announced last month that his government would impose a tariff of almost 100% on semiconductor imports, but that this would not apply to businesses who were already manufacturing in the United States or had promised to do so.
According to the Journal, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick presented the notion to semiconductor leaders, suggesting that it might be essential for economic stability.
Requests for comment from Reuters were not immediately answered by the US Commerce Department or the White House.
