According to Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, the protesters who are calling for the Scheduled Tribe (ST) are sincere, and even BJP employees would join the demonstration because it is a legitimate demand.
For a long time, the Koch Rajbongshis, Tai Ahoms, Morans, Mottocks, Chutias, and Tea Tribes have all called for ST classification. There was a large scale demonstration in Assam's Tinsukia. At the Hukan Pukhuri playground, thousands of Adivasis and tea garden laborers assembled to demand ST status, rights to own property, and a pay increase.
organized by the All Adivasi Students Association of Assam (AASAA) and the Assam Tea Tribe Students Association (ATTSA).
On Wednesday, Sarma traveled to Tinsukia to participate in a number of events.
"There will be a protest for genuine demand," Sarma stated. The people demonstrating in favor of Scheduled Tribe (ST) status are sincere.
The BJP is in favor of the ST demand as well. Even BJP employees will take part in the demonstration.
"We are also related to this protest," he continued. There will be protests in response to this legitimate demand.
Declaring the demonstration a "fight for dignity, identity, and justice," organizers cautioned that the campaign will continue throughout Assam until significant action is taken.
The Moran community imposed a four day economic blockade last month that left most of Upper Assam in a state of paralysis.
Under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, the All Moran Students Union (AMSU) and a number of other Moran organizations are organizing the agitation, which aims to include the community and grant Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.
