Cyclone Shakti to weaken scattered rainfall in Mumbai IMD predicts

Cyclone Shakti is expected to weaken starting Monday morning after gaining intensity in the Arabian Sea with wind gusts of up to 100 kmph since Saturday.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts that by Sunday evening, the cyclone would have moved to the northwest and the west central Arabian Sea and will start to recurve eastward.

Mumbai and other coastal areas of Maharashtra were under alert due to the catastrophic storm.

But the city has benefited from a change in the wind's course and patterns.

In contrast to earlier forecasts, the IMD stated on Sunday that Mumbai is not expected to experience severe or even moderate rainfall in the coming days.

Up until October 8, the department's five day prediction, which was released on Saturday, now calls for only light rain or sporadic drizzles.

Over the coast of North Maharashtra, gusty winds of 45 to 55 kmph with a maximum speed of 65 kmph were predicted from October 3 to October 5.

As cyclone Shakti weakens into the Arabian Sea, circumstances will stabilize, although officials say the winds may persist for a short while.
