MP bans Coldrif cough syrup after 14 children die toxic chemical found in samples



After 14 children in Chhindwara died from suspected renal failure, the Madhya Pradesh government banned the sale of Coldrif cough syrup .

According to officials, the medicine samples included a highly dangerous chemical.

The Union health ministry announced on Saturday that the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) has also started risk based inspections at the production facilities of 19 medications, including cough syrups and antibiotics, spread across six states.

The Tamil Nadu Directorate of Drug Control in Chennai declared a sample of the syrup "Not of Standard Quality" after it was examined by a government drug analyser at the Drug Testing Laboratory, according to officials here.

Following the deaths of 14 children in the Chhindwara district from probable kidney failure, the Madhya Pradesh government took this move.

Since September 7, ten of these deaths have been documented in the Parasia subdivision, according to local officials.

Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Saurabh Kumar Yadav informed PTI that Yogita (2), a Parasia native, passed away at a hospital in Nagpur on Saturday morning.

He stated that three children admitted in Nagpur were in serious condition and that six youngsters were receiving treatment, five in Nagpur and one in Chhindwara.

According to officials, financial aid of Rs 4 lakh was approved for the relatives of the 14 children who passed away.

Eleven people from the Parasia sub division, two from Chhindwara city, and one from Chaurai tehsil were among the deceased.

Shivam (9), Vidhi (6), Adnan (6), Usaid (9), Rishika (10), Hetansh (11), Vikas (9), Chanchlesh (8), and Sandhya Bhosom (7) were the nine youngsters that passed away previously in Parasia.

"The local administration has already prohibited the sale of Coldrif and another cough syrup, 'Nextro DS', on Monday as a precaution," SDM Yadav added.

While the Nextro DS test report was still pending, the Coldrif test report was delivered on Saturday.
