Himanta mourns death of 9 Assam workers in Chennai building collapse



According to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, nine construction workers from Assam perished in Tuesday's building collapse at Chennai's Ennore thermal power facility.

The chief minister wrote on 'X' that nine Assamese migrant laborers had reportedly died after falling at a construction site in Minjur, Thiruvallur district, today while working on the extension of the North Chennai Thermal Power Station.

According to him, five of the victims are from Hojai area and four are from Karbi Anglong district.

"We are working with Tamil Nadu authorities to return their mortal remains as soon as possible," Sarma stated.

According to him, the victims include Dipak Raijung, Suman Kharikap, Sorbojit Thausen, Phaibit Fanglu, Bidayum Porbosa, Paban Sorong, Prayanto Sorong, Munna Kemprai, and Dimaraj Thousen.

The CM expressed "my deepest condolences to their families and well wishers."

In addition to expressing his sorrow over the disaster, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund would provide the families of the deceased with an ex gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh.

MK Stalin, the chief minister of Tamil Nadu, declared that each deceased person's family will receive Rs 10 lakh in compensation and directed that measures be taken to return the lifeless remains to their home state.
