Assam Assembly Permits Motion on Zubeen Garg’s Death

On Tuesday, the opening day of the winter session, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma requested that the Speaker grant an adjournment motion made by the opposition in the Assam Assembly to debate the passing of singer Zubeen Garg.

Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia and Independent MLA Akhil Gogoi came up to beg that their adjournment motions on the same matter be granted when the House convened for the day's work following obituary references.

The CM stepped in just as Speaker Biswajit Daimary was going to give them a chance to discuss the motion's admissibility. Sarma asked the Speaker to grant the adjournment motion, stating that the government is equally in control of the situation.

Due to the seriousness of those issues, he also asked that other significant laws and additional grants that were originally on the day's schedule be permitted to be placed.

Sarma added that the government side will solely present its response and that no member of the Treasury benches will speak.

After approving the adjournment motion, the Speaker said that the measures and additional grants would be introduced in the House following the conclusion of the discussion. He asked the members not to say anything that could interfere with the inquiry into Garg's death.

On September 19, Garg passed away while swimming in the sea in Singapore. The circumstances surrounding his death are being investigated by the state police's Special Investigation Team.
