The Election Commission's special revision of electoral rolls has started in Assam and will take place over the next two and a half months. This process is extremely important because Assam will hold elections in March and April of next year, and it is taking place concurrently with the SIR process in several states, including West Bengal.
Since Assam's National Register of Citizens (NRC) process is still ongoing, SIR was not held there. Unlike SIR, the SR does not need voters to fill out an enumeration form.
House to house visits by Booth Level Officers (BLOs) to physically verify the current voter lists would be a crucial part of Assam's specific revision procedure.
This makes it "stricter than summary revision of voter lists, which takes place every year, but it will not be going into document verification like in the case of SIR (Special Intensive Revision), which took place in Bihar and is taking place in 12 other states," according to Assam CEO Goel. This house to house campaign will go across all 29,656 polling places in the state until December 20.
