Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, was chastised by the Congress party on Friday, November 28, 2025, for challenging the opposition parties to prevent him from taking office again and enacting the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). The 126 member Assam Assembly must be elected by May 2026.
Pawan Khera, a Congress leader, stated that widespread corruption and misrule meant the Chief Minister's days were running out.
"First of all, he won't take back his position of authority. He stated, "He is aware that he will be imprisoned following the next election.
The Chief Minister, according to Mr. Khera, is leading "the most corrupt government in the history of independent India" and destroying Assam's identity. He claimed that everytime the Chief Minister's name comes up, people talk about corruption.
"Assam has altered the definition of ABCD under the BJP. "Today, A stands for Adani, B for betel nut, C for cattle, and D for drugs," he remarked, alluding to claims that the government was supporting the smuggling of narcotics, cattle, and betel nuts while evicting locals to make room for the Adani Group's industrial facilities.
Mr. Khera asserted that the State Government was diminishing the Assamese people's ability to vote by adding outsiders to the electoral lists out of fear of the impending elections.
Additionally, he urged the Chief Minister to disclose the assets that his relatives had accumulated during the previous five to seven years.
Gaurav Gogoi, the head of the State Congress, accused the State administration of attacking India's rich cultural diversity by promoting the anti polygamy Bill.
"The Bharatiya Janata Party led government is being forced to take such actions, including the attempt to impose the UCC, by Nagpur the headquarters of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh," he claimed.
