Hundreds of flights were canceled by major US airports on Thursday in anticipation of the Federal Aviation Administration's drastic reduction to aviation traffic during the current and unprecedented government shutdown.
During the longest government shutdown in history, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) ordered airlines to reduce thousands of flights throughout the United States due to a lack of air traffic controllers.
The Trump administration will reduce flights at 40 "high impact" airports around the US by 10%, according to Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford. Flights at those airports are anticipated to be reduced by at least 4% on Friday and increased by up to 10% the following week.
On Friday, more than 700 flights were canceled, and the day cuts are scheduled to start. The FAA declared that 40 of the busiest airports in the US, located in 20 states, including New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago, would gradually cut their flight schedules by 10%. Many smaller airports may also see service interruptions, and by Thursday, some travelers had already started to alter or cancel their schedules.
Some of the busiest airports in the country, including those in Atlanta, Dallas, New York City, and Los Angeles, will be affected by the FAA's proposal to reduce airline capacity as a result of the government shutdown, the agency announced on Thursday.
According to an emergency order issued by the FAA on Thursday, the reduction will be phased in at airports beginning Friday at 6 a.m. local time, with airlines hitting the full 10% threshold by next week, according to CBS News.
Major cargo airports in Louisville, Memphis, Anchorage, Ontario, California, and other popular passenger airports in major cities and airline hubs are included in the list. Teterboro Airport in New Jersey, which is well-known for private aircraft and other general aviation operations, is another highlight.
