Retired Principal Arrested in Assam Over Delhi Blast

A retired school principal has been arrested in the Cachar region of Assam for reportedly making a contentious social media remark about Monday's explosion near Delhi's Red Fort.

According to police, they called Nazrul Islam Barbhuiyan, the accused, for interrogation on Tuesday afternoon after taking suo motu cognisance of the post.

Barbhuiyan, a resident of Silchar's Rongpur neighborhood, was first brought to the Silchar Sadar Police Station before being transferred to the Superintendent of Police's office for additional questioning.

Barbhuiyan, a former principal of Banskandi NMHS School in Cachar, reportedly wrote that "elections are coming ahead" in a social media comment regarding the Red Fort explosion.

According to police, the comment seemed to "politicise" a national security related occurrence. Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, denounced such online responses on Tuesday, stating, "Many users were seen celebrating and some shared 'happy' emojis." Do they have sympathy for terrorists? Such remarks will be met with severe consequences.

Nine people were killed and twenty injured in a devastating explosion that occurred on Monday close to Red Fort in New Delhi.

A slow moving Hyundai i20 exploded at a traffic light close to the Red Fort Metro Station at 6:52 p.m., scattering damaged cars and mangled bodies.
