On Monday, the Supreme Court requested a status report on Delhi's declining air quality from the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM). After learning that the majority of Delhi's air quality monitoring stations stayed closed during Diwali, a division bench made up of Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai and Justice K Vinod Chandran issued the directive.
A report from the CAQM was requested by Senior Advocate Aparajita Singh, an amicus curiae in the case. "CAQM needs to provide a report on the state of air pollution.
Only nine of the 37 monitoring systems in Delhi were operational throughout Diwali, she reported. The bench then requested that the CAQM provide a status report.
Last month, the Supreme Court allowed the sale and detonation of green firecrackers in Delhi-NCR during the Diwali celebration, but with strict limitations. The national capital's air quality significantly deteriorated the day following the recent Diwali festivities.
