Rajdhani Express derails after hitting elephants, killing 8; 5 coaches affected


 

In the early hours of Saturday, the Sairang New Delhi Rajdhani Express struck a herd in Assam's Hojai district, killing eight elephants and injuring one, according to a forest official.

According to a Northeast Frontier Railway representative, the event resulted in the derailment of five coaches and the engine of the train headed for New Delhi, although no passenger injuries were reported. The accident happened at approximately 2.17 am, according to the spokeswoman.

Suhash Kadam, the Nagaon divisional forest officer, told PTI that the incident happened in the Hojai district's Changjurai neighborhood. Soon after the tragedy, Kadam and other forest officials arrived at the scene.

Train services on the impacted Jamunamukh Kampur segment have been interrupted, according to railway authorities. While repair work is being done, trains that were supposed to travel through the area are being rerouted via the UP line, Kadam continued. The Sairang New Delhi Rajdhani Express links the Anand Vihar Terminal in Delhi with Sairang, Mizoram, which is close to Aizawl.
