Top Court Slams Assam Professor for Obscene Posts Threatening Girls

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court harshly condemned a professor at an Assamese college who had been detained for posting offensive and anti Indian content on social media, calling him "a threat to young girls" and a "pervert" who shouldn't be permitted to attend the school.

Md. Joynal Abedin, a professor at Gossaigaon College in the Kokrajhar district, was denied interim bail by a bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi, citing his tendency to stalk and make lewd comments to women online and his difficulty being released from custody.

"You frequently make lewd comments and abuse women on social media. You are a wicked man who poses a risk to young college girls. "What sort of academic are you? You are a disgrace to the term "professor." The bench made harsh comments against him, saying, "You shouldn't be allowed to enter the college."

The petitioner's attorney stated that he had apologized for the social media post that led to his imprisonment and had removed it as soon as he realised it went against the nation's interests.

He claimed that although the chargesheet had been filed in the case, the trial could not go forward since the Gossaigaon court had been without a judge for around six months.

The Assam government's attorney said that the accused was a repeat offender who frequently posted obscene things on social media. The bench described him as a "dirty mind" and a "threat to society" after reading his social media posts and being horrified by the profanity used.

The bench asked the attorney, "Should we ask you to read out what has been written here, so that everyone understands what the post is?" The accused has apologised and lost his job as a result of the incident, according to the petitioner's attorney.

"He will comply with any requirement imposed by the court. The chargesheet has been filed in the case, so please grant him bail," the attorney said.

While acknowledging that Abedin was taken into custody on May 16, the top court requested that the state's attorney find out if the Gossaigaon court has a judicial officer.

It asked the chief justice of the Gauhati High Court to investigate the situation and either move Abedin's case to the Kokrajhar district sessions court or assign a judge to the Gossaigaon court.

The bench informed his attorney, "We will look into the possibility of interim bail later." Gossaigaon resident Abedin was first held and then arrested for allegedly posting anti Indian content in May.
