There was a strong demon called Mura in the Satyayuga, according to old stories. He conquered heaven and vanquished numerous deities, including Indra.

His increasing power and crimes appalled the gods and goddesses. They went to Lord Shiva to ask for assistance. Shiva then suggested that they turn to Lord Vishnu for protection.

Lord Vishnu decided to annihilate Mura after hearing the gods prayers. He reached Chandravati, the city where Mura ruled, along with the gods.

Vishnu and Mura engaged in an intense combat that lasted for a very long period. Lord Vishnu withdrew to repose in the Hemavati cave in Badrinath when the conflict seemed to have no end.

They were followed by the demon Mura, who arrived at the same cave. A bright, strong female sprang from the Lord's body as he attempted to strike the sleeping Vishnu.

Mura was instantly killed by the divine girl. Lord Vishnu was extremely pleased with Mura's bravery when he opened his eyes from sleep and found the girl lying lifeless. He gave the daughter a blessing: since she was born on Ekadashi, everyone would refer to her as "Ekadashi."

Every age would revere her, and salvation would be attained by those who faithfully kept the Ekadashi fast. Additionally, Vishnu declared that he would value the Ekadashi fast more than any other kind of devotion.
