The Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) in Assam granted Indian citizenship to two individuals, including a woman, bringing the total number of beneficiaries under the Act in the state to four, according to their attorney on Sunday.
This was the first time a woman has been granted citizenship under the Act in the northeastern state, according to senior counsel Dharmananda Deb, a former member of the Foreigners Tribunal in Silchar.
Deb claims that the 61-year-old guy arrived in India in 1975 and lived in the Cachar area, while the 40-year-old woman arrived from Bangladesh in 2007 and lived in the Sribhumi district.
The citizenship certificates were issued on Friday by the Ministry of Home Affairs. According to Deb, both people's citizenship was considered to have taken effect on the day they entered India. Citing worries about potential social persecution, he refused to reveal their identities.
