Bajrang Dal activists held for damaging Assam school's Christmas decor

On Christmas Day, police in the Nalbari district of Assam detained activists associated with the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal for reportedly damaging Christmas decorations at a Christian school in advance of the holiday.

The arrests, according to officials, came when Christmas-related items and decorations were allegedly vandalized at St. Mary's English School in Panigaon. The school administration filed an official report after the event, which happened on December 24, the day before Christmas.

A gang of people allegedly broke into the school, damaged decorations, and put some items on fire, according to the principal's complaint. Additionally, the group is accused of shouting "Jai Shri Ram," "Jai Hindu Rashtra," and "Bharat Mata Ki Jai" during the incident.

After receiving the complaint, police stated, a case was filed under several provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Four people were arrested after the case was registered. Senior local leaders connected to the VHP and Bajrang Dal are allegedly among those detained.

According to officials, the suspected vandalism happened just before the school was set to have Christmas celebrations. The authorities acted quickly after the damage to the materials and decorations interfered with festival preparations.

In order to uncover the complete chronology of events and ascertain whether other people were involved in the incident, the police indicated that investigations are still underway. According to the investigation's findings, more action will be taken, officials said.

During the holiday season, there is increased awareness of religious festivals and communal harmony, which coincides with the arrests.

Authorities have reaffirmed their dedication to upholding law and order and making sure that educational and religious institutions are shielded from threats and acts of vandalism. The event did not result in any reported injuries. Further information on potential charges or the next steps in the legal process has not yet been made public by the police.
