Modi, Shah to visit Assam as BJP boosts development and outreach

With Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah planned to make a number of high-profile visits to Assam later this month, the ruling BJP is expected to step up its political and development outreach in the state with an eye toward the 2026 Assam Assembly elections.

Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, announced the schedule on a live feed and stated that the visits will highlight innovative infrastructure projects and increase economic confidence.

The new terminal at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, which was constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 4,000 crore, would be inaugurated by the Prime Minister upon his arrival in Assam on December 20.

Inspired by the design of the traditional kopou phool (foxtail orchid) and constructed from local bamboo, the terminal combines top-notch aviation services with Assamese culture.

During the opening, an 80-foot statue of Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi will also be revealed. "The new terminal has cutting-edge amenities and is breathtakingly gorgeous.

"Assamese bamboo has been used extensively, and its design reflects our culture," Sarma stated, adding that he will personally present the terminal the day before it opened.

The National Highways Authority of India is anticipated to submit a proposal for an elevated corridor that will immediately connect Guwahati airport to Jalukbari, according to the Chief Minister's announcement of future development plans surrounding the airport.

In order to provide local youngsters with work prospects, plans are also on for an aviation training school with simulators, an aerocity project, and an aircraft Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) hub.

Following the airport program, on December 20, the Prime Minister will attend a meeting in Guwahati and then speak with BJP employees at the party office.

Modi is scheduled to visit the Brahmaputra inland waterways port on December 21. Nirmala Sitharaman officially opened the terminal last month.

He will board the Charaideo ferry and take part in a Pariksha Pe Charcha session with 25–30 children from Classes 9, 10, and 11, where they will talk about preparation and stress associated to exams.

"An additional tourist attraction will be the Prime Minister's ferry ride across the Brahmaputra. "We think this will project Brahmaputra as a major tourism destination, just as tourist foot traffic increased after his visit to Kaziranga," Sarma stated.

For the first time as a sitting prime minister, the prime minister will also pay tribute to the 860 martyrs by visiting the Assam Movement Martyrs' Memorial.

Modi will visit Dibrugarh, which is being developed by the state government to serve as Assam's second capital, later that day. The expansion of the Namrup fertilizer factory will be a key priority for the Dibrugarh leg.

A new Rs 10,000-crore project, jointly sponsored by the Centre (60%) and the Assam government (40%), intends to increase production to 12 lakh metric tons of urea yearly, while the current facility produces about three lakh metric tonnes. "This will enable exports to other parts of India and make Assam self-reliant in fertilizer production," Sarma stated.

The Home Minister will travel to Assam on December 29 for a number of administrative and cultural events after Modi departs. Shah will open development projects, including the recently constructed Bhagawat Griha, at Batadrava and Borduwa, the birthplace of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardeva.

In addition, he will start a statewide CCTV monitoring project and open the 5,000-seat Jyoti-Bishnu auditorium. Shah is scheduled to return to Dibrugarh next month to lay the foundation stone for the new Assam Legislative Assembly complex.

Notably, Amit Shah traveled to Assam in March and August, while Prime Minister Modi visited the state twice this year in February and September.

As Assam approaches the 2026 Assembly elections, the BJP's top leadership's consecutive trips highlight a concerted plan to combine political mobilization with governance.

"I urge the people of Assam to attend these programmes and witness the scale of development taking place in the state," Sarma added, inviting people to take part.
