Savarkar's works in Gujarat varsity syllabus at PM Modi's behest

According to Prashant Rupera, Maharaja Sayajirao University (MSU) has added writings by PM Narendra Modi and Hindutva thinker V D Savarkar in a new BA (English) minor course developed under the National Education Policy-2020.

"Jyotipunj" by Modi and "Inside the Enemy Camp" by Savarkar have been added to the new course "Analyzing and Understanding Non-Fictional Writings on Bharat" by the English Department at MSU's Faculty of Arts. The course has been offered since the current school year (2025–2026).

Selected works by Sri Aurobindo and Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay, texts by Swami Vivekananda, and excerpts from the PM's "Mann Ki Baat" radio speech are also included in the syllabus. In order to match English studies with India's national aspirations, this curriculum is an intentional academic intervention.

Instead of staying limited to colonial or Eurocentric canons, it introduces a self-assured Indian approach where English is utilized to study Bharat's own thinkers, leaders, and ideals. According to Prof. Hitesh D. Raviya, head of MSU's English department and chair of the Board of Studies in English Language and Literature, "the course operationalizes PM's call for decolonization of education by embedding Indian intellectual traditions within mainstream university curricula."

According to university representatives, the course's goal is to analyze Indian nonfiction works in the context of English literary studies.
