Zubeen death: SIT charges seven, murder charges against four

The chargesheet and other pertinent papers in the Zubeen Garg death case have been filed to the Chief Judicial Magistrate's court in Guwahati by the Assam Police's Special Investigation Team (SIT).

On September 19, 2025, Zubeen Garg passed away while swimming in Singapore. As a cultural brand ambassador for the North East India Festival, he was in Singapore.

On September 19, before to the start of the festival, he reportedly went on a yacht cruise with members of the Assam Association Singapore and passed out while swimming.

In relation to Zubeen's death, the Assam Police SIT is looking into a Criminal Investigation Department (CID) case that was filed under charges of criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide not amounting to murder, and causing death by negligence, to which murder charges were further added.

Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, has previously referred to the singer's passing as a "murder." From the first day on, it was a murder case.

Sarma had stated last month that "the accused Shyamkanu Mahanta, Siddharth Sharma, Amritprava Mahanta, and Shekhar Jyoti Goswami are locked up in a murder case."

Since then, seven persons have been detained in relation to this investigation, including Garg's manager Siddhartha Sharma and event organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta.

Along with his two Personal Security Officers (PSOs), Paresh Baishya and Nandeswar Bora, three individuals who had traveled with him to Singapore have also been arrested: his bandmates Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Amritprava Mahanta, as well as his cousin and Assam Police Service officer Sandipan Garg.

Both the current Lok Sabha session and the just finished Assam Legislative Assembly winter session have brought up the subject of Zubeen's killing and the investigation into it.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who has called Zubeen's death a murder in multiple public remarks, said in the Assembly that "one (of the arrested) has killed him and the others assisted."

Meanwhile, the police in Singapore, the location of the killing, are conducting their own inquiry. It had declared that "foul play" was not suggested by its initial examination.
