Assam CM stands by claim of BJP agents in Congress

On Wednesday, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma revived his ongoing assertion of having "agents" within the Congress party, expressing that he would be "pleased" if individuals supported him from within the ranks of the Opposition.

Sarma's comments emerged amid a new political controversy following the resignation of Rejaul Karim Sarkar, who had recently joined Congress but left the party on January 14, alleging that senior Congress figures, including Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia and Nagaon MP Pradyut Bordoloi, were functioning as "BJP agents."

"I will feel pleased if individuals work on my behalf, and it's true that people do represent me in Congress," Sarma stated sarcastically in response to media inquiries during a seed capital distribution event in Karbi Anglong.

The Chief Minister also took the chance to criticize Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi, blaming him for not taking prompt action following Sarkar's contentious remarks.

Regarding Sarkar’s comments in Dhubri–Sivasagar that sparked severe backlash from political and civil circles, Sarma remarked that Gogoi, in his capacity as the MP from Jorhat, should have ensured Sarkar's expulsion from the party before the matter escalated.

"Following the Dhubri comment, Gaurav Gogoi should have expelled him from the Congress. His failure to do so means that Karim will now portray himself as a hero.

This is why we expected Gogoi to remove him from the party; he lacked the resolve to do it," Sarma stated. The Chief Minister’s assertion of having supporters within the Congress is not unprecedented.

On numerous occasions previously, Sarma has openly claimed that he has reliable contacts within the party who provide him with what he calls “direct insight into internal discussions and strategies.”

In July 2025, Sarma alleged that he was aware of discussions from a confidential Congress meeting in Guwahati, claiming that senior leader Rahul Gandhi said Sarma would ultimately face imprisonment.

“Put it in writing, Himanta Biswa Sarma will certainly be jailed’, these were the precise words of the Leader of the Opposition,” the Chief Minister asserted at that time.

Sarma’s recent statements have intensified the political controversy surrounding Sarkar’s resignation, heightening the tensions between the ruling BJP and the already troubled Assam Congress.
