On Sunday, January 11, 2026, a bandh was organized to protest the alleged rape of a mentally challenged woman in the Kokrajhar district of Assam, disrupting normal life.

The accused was captured in a matter of hours after the rape, which occurred on Saturday, January 10, 2026, in the district's Patharghat neighborhood.

According to officials, the accused, who was from the Dhubri district, was hurt by police gunfire after allegedly attempting to take an escorting officer's weapon and run away.

The World Hindu Federation called for the closure, which kept businesses and marketplaces closed and prevented public transportation from operating.

According to officials, prohibitory measures under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita were put in place to stop the state of law and order from getting worse. They added that in order to keep the calm, more troops were stationed in strategic areas.

The administration cautioned against being influenced by rumors and threatened to take severe legal action against individuals who spread them.

Misleading information had to be reported to the district control room. To prevent the situation from getting worse, District Commissioner Pankaj Chakravarty and Senior Superintendent of Police Akshat Garg met peacefully with members of political parties, social organizations, student organizations, and prominent residents.

According to Mr. Chakravarty, the district government was keeping a careful eye on the situation and has taken the required steps to maintain public peace and tranquility.

According to him, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been established to look into the occurrence and guarantee justice through the legal system.

According to him, street lights and CCTV cameras are being installed in places that are considered vulnerable. He urged all facets of society to put their faith in democracy and cooperate for the growth of Kokrajhar, which is home to numerous communities, emphasizing harmony and unity.

Due to the heated circumstances, a senior police officer stated that the accused was confined in a "safe zone." He needed to use the restroom as we were taking him from Rani Ghuli to the Kokrajhar court this evening.

The accused then allegedly attempted to attack an escorting police officer, stole a weapon from him, and fled, according to the officer.

"The accused was shot in the waist during retaliatory firing. In the altercation, two police officers were also hurt, he continued. According to the officer, the injured accused was first treated at the Kokrajhar RNB Civil Hospital before being transferred to the Kokrajhar Medical College and Hospital for more sophisticated care.
