In order to improve urban liveability and strengthen climate resilience in six Assamese districts, the Centre and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) have inked a USD 125 million financing deal.
The finance ministry announced on Monday that the project will improve storm water management infrastructure and provide uninterrupted metered water delivery to 360,000 Assamese homes.According to the statement, it also aims to improve urban government by enhancing capacity and implementing institutional changes.
According to the ministry, important infrastructure investments include the building of 800 km of distribution pipelines and six water treatment facilities with a total daily capacity of 72 million litres in the district headquarters of Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Dhubri, Goalpara, Golaghat, and Nalbari.
According to the statement, the project will also implement a real time monitoring system with the goal of keeping non revenue water below 20%.
According to the government, the project will also increase groundwater recharge and flood discharge in Guwahati by enhancing storm water management in the Bahini Basin with flood diversion channels, improved drainage systems, and a nature based retention pond.
Mio Oka, Country Director, India Resident Mission, for ADB, and Juhi Mukherjee, Joint Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, for the Government of India, signed the loan agreement for the Assam Urban Sector Development Project.
