Bill to declare Amaravati as Andhra Pradesh's capital underway

The Centre is in the process of drafting an amendment bill to officially identify Amaravati as the capital of Andhra Pradesh, according to sources.

Declaring Amaravati as the capital has been a longstanding goal of the state's chief minister, N Chandrababu Naidu, whose TDP is a crucial NDA supporter. His predecessor, YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, had earlier shelved the project.

According to the individuals previously mentioned, the Center will change the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act to grant legal sanctity to Naidu's dream project, Amaravati.

In order to thwart any future attempts by Reddy or other chief ministers to change the capital, Naidu has been pressuring the Center to designate the city as the capital.

Between 2019 and 2024, Reddy, as chief minister, has floated the idea of three capitals for Andhra, with Visakhapatnam as the executive or financial capital, Amaravati as the legislative capital, and Kurnool as the judicial capital.

According to reports, an amendment is likely to be brought in Section 5 (2) of the Act. The change will add Amaravati as the new capital, sources said.

According to reports, Naidu has informed the BJP's senior leadership that the amendment bill is "crucial" and ought to move quickly.
